Earth Day poetry
I love the Earth, and I love trees! I sort of assumed I was going to write a bunch of poems about trees this week, but as I sought inspiration in the photos I took on a hike through the Catskills on Tuesday, these poems came out; a haiku, an idyl, a word soup poem about flowers, and some free verse. I hope you enjoy the poetry and the photos that inspired them. Happy Earth day. xx
4.543 billion years
The Earth gets a day
while sharks get a whole week -
Which one do you fear?
Ashokan reservoir
Last autumns leaves
Brown as dirt, lack
Color as they crunch
Beneath our feet.
We make our way
Off the beaten path
To a man-made lake
turned mirror of the sky
The geese, a happy family
Swan on by.
Leaving ripples in reality
In their wake.
If only we could take this boat
And join them.
Leaving life at the shore
As we sail out on reflections
Up into the sky.
Tulips
from
Two lips
True eclipse
Outgrew conflicts
(Come through bag of tricks)
Come true what I predict:
‘Earth renew a global shift
A new chance to coexist
Pursue! Persist!
You commit
To transmit
Earthly love
With your
Tulips’
Gayea, my goddess
To me, you are a mountain
caves for lungs,
veins of golden blood
And a heart
of molten lava
You slumber
Just over the river
(Which are your thoughts)
And dream our destiny
Once you walked
And let down tears as life
Carved canyons from your bones
And made clouds
From your daydreams
Made love to the stars
And the sun
And the moon
While you danced
In a spiral
Out towards the edges of existence
E x p a n d i n g
With every
Breath.
Now you slumber
Our eternal mother
And we must
Care for the bounty
You bequeathed us
Least you wake
And remake the world
Without us in it.
Happy earth day everyone.
